CK3 Intrigue Guide: Schemes, Spies, and Secrets
Intrigue is the dark side of CK3, and it’s one of the most powerful tools in the game. You can murder your way to a throne, seduce your way into an alliance, or blackmail your way into a council seat. It’s not always pretty, but it’s effective. Here’s how the intrigue system actually works.
The Basics: Schemes
Schemes are the core of intrigue. They’re long-term plots you start against a target, and they progress over time until they either succeed or fail. There are several types:
- Murder — kill your target. The classic.
- Seduce — start a romance with your target.
- Fabricate Hook — create a hook (leverage) on your target.
- Claim Throne — press a claim on a title you have a claim to.
- Abduct — kidnap your target.
Each scheme has a success chance, which is affected by your intrigue skill, your target’s intrigue skill, the scheme’s secrecy, and various other factors.
Scheme Success Chance
Your scheme’s success chance is the number you’re trying to maximize. Here’s what affects it:
- Your intrigue skill — higher is better
- Your target’s intrigue skill — higher is worse
- Scheme secrecy — if your scheme is discovered, it fails. Keep it secret
- Agents — you can recruit agents to help your scheme. Each agent adds to your success chance, but they also risk exposing the scheme
- Lifestyle perks — the Intrigue lifestyle tree has perks that boost scheme success
The key insight: agents are the most important factor. A well-staffed scheme with good agents is dramatically more likely to succeed than a solo effort. But every agent is a potential leak, so choose carefully.
The Spymaster
Your spymaster is your most important councilor for intrigue. They do two things:
- Find secrets — your spymaster can discover secrets about characters in your realm or abroad. Secrets are leverage
- Protect you — your spymaster can also protect you from schemes targeting you
Using your spymaster to find secrets is one of the most powerful actions in the game. Secrets can be used to:
- Blackmail — get a hook on someone, which lets you force them to do things
- Expose — ruin someone’s reputation
- Imprison — if the secret is a crime, you can imprison them
Hooks
Hooks are the currency of intrigue. A hook is leverage you have over someone, and it lets you force them to do things they wouldn’t otherwise do. Hooks can be:
- Strong hooks — you can force almost anything
- Weak hooks — you can force limited things
You get hooks from blackmailing people with secrets, from the Fabricate Hook scheme, and from various events. Hooks are incredibly powerful — you can use them to:
- Force a council seat — get yourself on the council
- Force a marriage — marry someone who wouldn’t otherwise accept
- Force a title grant — get a title from your liege
- Force an alliance — get an alliance without a marriage
The Intrigue Lifestyle
The Intrigue lifestyle tree is the skill tree for schemers. The key perks:
- Schemer — boosts scheme success chance and secrecy
- Torturer — boosts dread, which makes people afraid of you
- Seductress/Seducer — boosts seduction schemes and gives you hooks from lovers
- Truth is Relative — makes it harder for others to discover your secrets
The Intrigue tree is powerful, but it’s not for everyone. It’s best for characters who want to play the political game rather than the military one.
Practical Intrigue Tips
- Always have your spymaster finding secrets. An idle spymaster is a wasted spymaster.
- Don’t scheme against everyone. Every scheme you run risks exposure. Focus on the ones that matter.
- Use hooks before they expire. Hooks can expire, so use them while you have them.
- Dread is your friend. High dread makes vassals afraid to scheme against you. It’s a defensive tool as much as an offensive one.
- Be careful with murder. Murdering a powerful ruler can backfire if you’re caught. Make sure your scheme is well-staffed and secret.
The Bottom Line
Intrigue is one of the most powerful systems in CK3, and it’s often overlooked by new players who focus on military and economy. But a well-played intrigue game can accomplish what armies can’t — removing a rival, securing a claim, or forcing a marriage. Master the scheme system, keep your spymaster busy, and collect hooks like they’re going out of style.
Just remember: what goes around comes around. The same schemes you use on others can be used on you. Keep your own secrets close and your spymaster closer.
